In our bit on Freud, I mentioned this book

Norman O’Brown (1985) Life Against Death. He takes ‘repression’ as Freud’s key constrct and suggests that Freud’s pessimism can only be overcome by taking a more historical – Marxist – perspective. There are some good comments on Amazon here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Life-Against-Death-Psychoanalytical-Meaning/dp/0819561444/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=life+against+death&qid=1577812814&sr=8-1
